graveyard

the theatre

You awaken in a darkened theatre.

In front of you is an enormous cinema screen. On it plays everything that's currently happening in the castle, accompanied by appropriate sound effects and background instrumentals when fitting. The seat you're sitting on is large and plush, and while there's many of them, there's enough room in the theatre for you to fully recline the seat into a comfortable bed if you wish. Under each seat is a sleeping mask and noise-cancelling headphones, in case you'd like to take a break from watching the show.

Follow the stairs up and you'll reach what should be the projection room. There are no projectors in here, however; it is simply a large and well-lit room above the main seating area, and a good place to hang out with your fellow eliminated contestants if shouting at each other across the aisles proves too much to handle.

If you leave the theatre through the door in the back, you'll find yourself in a hall. On one end is a concession stand. It's stocked with standard movie snacks - popcorn, candy and the like - but if you're feeling the urge for something else, you'll be able to find it stocked somewhere in the back. On the other end is a table with thirty wrapped bags and a placard reading 'A star for our stars! Please accept these lovely giftbags as a token of appreciation for your hard work, sponsored by [illegible smudge]'. Each bag has a tag bearing the name of someone in the mansion; you will only be able to open the bag with your name on it. As soon as you open it, any memories that have been taken from you, including those of the other people in the mansion that you may have forgotten, will be returned in their entirety. Within the bag are also objects from your home that you may want for your stay here, though you will find no weapons.

Past the hall is another door, this one wooden and seemingly decayed. If you go inside, you'll find a fairly simple, wooden room, that is empty except for a very large machine. It is difficult to tell what the machine is for; it has a touch screen that appears to be a control panel, as well as a large open space that seems to be part of the machine, but the machine is dead and won't turn on no matter what you do.

Still, at least you aren't alone here. You have your fellow players, as well as a few guests to keep you company.

Oh, and one more thing. At midnight following each execution, once all those who've died that week have woken up, a video will begin to play on screen.

[Peko doesn't take it as an insult at all; it's obvious whose life she considers most important, and it's definitely not her own.]

I see.

[There's a lot going on here, but Peko can only nod. She doesn't have much of a choice but to trust that Rapture knows what she's doing (even if she'd rather not).]

Three years... did you watch the previous seasons, then? Forty-eight and forty-nine?

[ She shakes her head. ]

We were too busy fighting for our lives. This is the closest we've ever come to figuring something out, the closest we've got to a game.

Can you tell me who you were fighting? And where?

The castle this round takes place in... ours wasn't like that. It was a manor — still fairly large, but not as big as this place. [ She motions to the screen. ] The servants quarter was locked and there was this weird... machine that lead to this place, but we never figured out how it worked because there wasn't any time to.

After we 'won' there were these... doors. They were marked with our names and what year — when I went through mine, I... I don't know where I ended up. It definitely wasn't L.A., it was still a part of this place. I didn't have to search around to realize that. It's always changing. There's never one singular place they stay and whatever machine that was, they've probably got is somewhere around the castle.

We were fighting them, him — the producer and everyone who tried to catch us and... [ She looks over at Spain. ] Make us forget and play it all over again.

A machine... like the one in that room down the hallway? Or something entirely different?

[Peko being restless and exploring her surroundings revealed that much a while ago, at least. But she turns everything else over in her mind, visibly giving it all careful consideration.]

If you were fighting them... How is it you came to be here, with us, and not be caught?

[ Rapture looks a little perturbed. ] Did it make a weird humming noise?

Well it wasn't easy. I got lucky and ran into the two of them. [ She motions to the married couple. ] They went through an entirely different door together and still ended up... wherever I was too. They're more trained for getting out of danger than I am, but I served us plenty of good luck.

I... don't know what happened to any of the others or if they ended up like Rin, Spain, and Kaoru did.

It didn't do anything at all. It's in the same hallway as the concession stand. Have you not gone there?

[And Peko had just left it at that, since fucking with machines is one of her classmates's jobs, not hers.]

But if you went through the doors, and eventually wound up here... [she finally looks disquieted.] Where are my classmates? And the others? This whole game, the promise has been that should one succeed and survive, one can go home with the reward. Is that all a lie?

[If it were, it really shouldn't surprise her at this point.]

No... I might be killed. There was a button on it I pushed that did... something to those who remained in here, I'm not exactly sure what. [ She's obviously skeptical about going into any rooms with wooden doors while in this place. She has to wonder though... ] But it probably is the thing — or a connector or... something that has to do with whatever that was.

I don't know. Maybe they're still running too... [ She actually looks a little disheartened at that. ] The producer and his lackeys don't exactly keep their promises. Felicia over there is a perfect example of that.

Mm.

[Well, Peko can't really fault her for that, especially considering the machine did jack-all when she was back there. She's quiet, looking to Rapture before returning her attention to the screen.]

So for the moment, all we can do is wait for some sign, and we will be spared that fate?

Right. At least... that's what we're hoping. We don't know if it'll get us out of this... universe or whatever it is, but I know I certainly won't stick around here when it's all said and done.
