graveyard

the theatre

You awaken in a darkened theatre.

In front of you is an enormous cinema screen. On it plays everything that's currently happening in the castle, accompanied by appropriate sound effects and background instrumentals when fitting. The seat you're sitting on is large and plush, and while there's many of them, there's enough room in the theatre for you to fully recline the seat into a comfortable bed if you wish. Under each seat is a sleeping mask and noise-cancelling headphones, in case you'd like to take a break from watching the show.

Follow the stairs up and you'll reach what should be the projection room. There are no projectors in here, however; it is simply a large and well-lit room above the main seating area, and a good place to hang out with your fellow eliminated contestants if shouting at each other across the aisles proves too much to handle.

If you leave the theatre through the door in the back, you'll find yourself in a hall. On one end is a concession stand. It's stocked with standard movie snacks - popcorn, candy and the like - but if you're feeling the urge for something else, you'll be able to find it stocked somewhere in the back. On the other end is a table with thirty wrapped bags and a placard reading 'A star for our stars! Please accept these lovely giftbags as a token of appreciation for your hard work, sponsored by [illegible smudge]'. Each bag has a tag bearing the name of someone in the mansion; you will only be able to open the bag with your name on it. As soon as you open it, any memories that have been taken from you, including those of the other people in the mansion that you may have forgotten, will be returned in their entirety. Within the bag are also objects from your home that you may want for your stay here, though you will find no weapons.

Past the hall is another door, this one wooden and seemingly decayed. If you go inside, you'll find a fairly simple, wooden room, that is empty except for a very large machine. It is difficult to tell what the machine is for; it has a touch screen that appears to be a control panel, as well as a large open space that seems to be part of the machine, but the machine is dead and won't turn on no matter what you do.

Still, at least you aren't alone here. You have your fellow players, as well as a few guests to keep you company.

Oh, and one more thing. At midnight following each execution, once all those who've died that week have woken up, a video will begin to play on screen.

EVEN LATER THAN YUYUKO...

[Though the past contestant whom Feferi imitated at the ball can clearly be seen greeting her fellow troll girl, she does not fight her way through the designated killers' group hug mob. In fact, she is nowhere to be seen for quite a few hours after the investigation commences onscreen. Only at half-past noon does Kanaya drift back into the theater, bringing with her the distinct scent of Nagumo clan cuisine. A bento reconstructed from paperboard movie theater combo boxes rests in her softly glowing hands. The soft drink contains warm green tea, a cardboard candy wrapper protects a squishy aburage, and the central popcorn repository is host to ample portions of rice and beef cutlets soaked in sauce from shamefully cheap packets. The carrot slices are in stiff chunky zigzags given the limitations of plastic knives.]

It's about time for lunch, Ms. Yukimura. You seemed a little preoccupied.
derepressed: (oops i told everyone okita is sick)

[To say that Chizuru is stunned is a bit of an understatement. The last thing she was expecting was to be given a bento made by a troll, let alone a troll she recognizes from the portraits of past contestants (and as the person Feferi was dressed as at the ball). It takes her a moment or two to collect herself, during which her gaze keeps flicking between the bento and Kanaya's face.

Then her cheeks color when she realizes it's sort of rude to just be standing there. She shakes her head to snap herself out of it and reaches for the bento.]

Um. Thank you. [That's stammered out just a little bit.] ...it smells very good. You must have gone through some effort to prepare this. Ah— I'm so sorry, I've been rude, I don't know your name, um..! But.. you know Feferi-san, right? ...and you were from the same season as Kaoru.
speakveryclearly: Kanaya wearing Zahhak glasses and giant waist bow, posing for the camera with hands on her hips and a smirk on her face. (Model)

Yes, I'm Kanaya. [Much like Feferi-san, it rests in her mouth the way a Western-style given name does.] You're right on all counts; both of them were my friends.

[Her hands relax into a clasped position after Chizuru takes that thing off her hands; there's an iron band around her left ring finger.] I'm very grateful to you for taking such good care of him. [The choice of masculine singular pronoun over neutral plural is clearly deliberate in any mode of speech as crisp and deliberate as hers; she watches carefully for Chizuru's reaction.]
derepressed: (there is despair here)

[personal profile] derepressed 2014-07-25 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Kanaya-san... it's, um. Nice to meet you.

[Given name it may be, but it's easy enough for Chizuru to pronounce. The whole reason Feferi is "Feferi-san" is because "Peixes-san" is a mouthful.

She tenses up and her grip on the bento tightens; a moment later, she looks down.]

...I'm grateful to you for being his friend. The Kaoru I remember from home, he's... experienced too little kindness in his life, and it's very... unfair.
speakveryclearly: Kanaya looks down, eyes almost closed, at Eridan in a meadow. She is wearing short sleeves, his scarf, and green makeup. (Conciliatory)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2014-07-25 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, Kanaya has seen from Peko that "Maryam" would be an absolute mess. Getting onto a first-name basis with Kaoru was such an improvement for all parties involved.

Chizuru's description of Kaoru's circumstances is... surprisingly enough something Kanaya takes completely in stride, as if she had known exactly what Chizuru was talking about already. Her reaction only occurs when Chizuru is completely done speaking: her friendly smile brightens even further.]
It must be hard to trust an embittered male demon with nothing left to lose. But even if he doesn't really remember, he has something... [She is looking up up and away now, like an anime protagonist - the direction of her gaze is a little odd, mirrored compared to the way Chizuru and her friends usually do this.] We have to believe in the strength he has from the bonds he made with all of us. He absolutely won't lose to this game after all that it took from us before.
derepressed: (the best dango i ever had)

[personal profile] derepressed 2014-07-25 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
..."all of us".

[Chizuru repeats the phrase and looks up at Kanaya, her expression slightly more hopeful.]

You're - you're not the only friend he made..? [The surprise with which she says that might be a little insulting to Kaoru, if he'd heard it. But he doesn't hear it! So that's okay!] I'm so glad. If he has all of you to rely on, he really might be okay.

[...two-month-old habits die hard. Even with her memories back in place, even though she can clearly recall everything Kaoru has done to make her miserable, she's glad he has people to look out for him. Though, the way she's talking - "all of you" rather than "all of us" - makes it clear enough that she doesn't expect to be counted as one of Kaoru's friends should he ever regain his memories.]
speakveryclearly: Kanaya reaches up to hold Karkat's face with both hands as she says something tender to him with closed eyes. (Hold)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2014-07-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the only one at all! [She's so happy Chizuru is taking this news well...] There's Rapture, and Sonia, and Spain, and Stiles... [She stops in spite of looking like she could have kept listing for quite a while -- these are a bunch of names Chizuru mostly won't know and cross-referencing them through costumes would take quite a while. More importantly:]

Even May Chang [she wouldn't have called her by full name but May on its own is too easily mistaken for Mei Misaki] you saw that martial artist with the panda in Wriggle's costume? She was also cast as his hostage. If there was no one he cared about in Kyoto, there was someone who touched him from elsewhere, you see.
derepressed: (um hey are you... alright...)

[personal profile] derepressed 2014-07-25 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's spoken to Rapture and recognizes Spain from this season (she owes him a thank-you for looking out for Kaoru, she supposes), but she has no idea who Sonia and Stiles are.

But there is some vague recognition when it comes to May. Not from the name - but from the description of her being his hostage.]

Chang-san must really have meant a lot to him, for them to think that taking her would work. Ah, but... [Her brows furrow.] The hostages. From the last week we had them and from this week...

Is any of that real? Did... did Feferi-san's death and my death save them?

speakveryclearly: The back of Kanaya's head, in black and white. (Away)

[personal profile] speakveryclearly 2014-07-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Kanaya opens her mouth, shuts it, opens it more reluctantly, and finally refuses to meet Chizuru's gaze.]

May Chang is thirteen years old now, not that ten year old they showed you in the compact.

[She hates this part. She doesn't like to let herself believe these things, even three years later, that this game of life and death is founded on lies.]

There's much more to life than meets the eye, than returning to Okita-san's side or absconding with your sibling or protecting your race. Why else would a mere eight out of thirty people defeating the mastermind pass for inspirational?
derepressed: (this is me pitying you)

[personal profile] derepressed 2014-07-26 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
...I... see.

[So it was a lie. She isn't sure whether to be disappointed or relieved by that - disappointed, because she and Feferi were killed and it didn't even save anyone; relieved, because their friends and family were never in that situation in the first place.]

So then... we need to focus on those things that make life more than it seems, rather than on the things the producers want us to worry over...?
