Secret key in a passageway they had to find for the investigation, just so happens to lead to a safe behind Nanami-san's portrait... and it happens to claiming all these things, and telegraphing the idea that Nanami-san needs to die... it's a set-up. Honestly, I'd not be surprised if the entire trial is a set-up, just to drag them on some idiotic goose chase.
